7 Harmful Effects of Inadequate Sleep


Sleep is very vital in our lives not getting enough sleep can result to a number of health implications.

Below are seven (7) adverse effects of insufficient sleep:

1. Cause of diseases

Inadequate night sleep can cause numerous diseases.

Many clinical studies have shown a hormone known as cortisol is released in the body as we sleep late.

This hormone can increase in our blood pressure and reduce cell regeneration activity.

You can also develop diseases such as cancer, diabetes and hypertension if you constantly deprive your self of sleep.

2. It's Another Source of Stress

Inadequate night sleep is another source of stress.

It’s been generally observed that people who sleep less  find themselves more stressed than those that sleep more, in fact sleep is one of the stress management tools.

People who sleep late are known to depend more on sleeping pills for sleep which can further increase stress levels in their daily life.

3. Headaches & back aches

Insufficient sleep affects the brain most adversely. 

Its functioning is hampered considerably and you struggle with frequent headaches. 

Even your body troubles you in form of back aches.

4. It Makes Your Skin Age Faster

Not getting enough sleep makes your body to release more of the stress hormone known as cortisol. 

In excess amounts, cortisol can break down skin collagen (the protein that keeps skin smooth and elastic) which makes your skin to age faster.

5. Lack of Sleep Kills Sex Drive

Lack of sleep can kill you sex drive YES!
Medical experts said that sleep-deprived men and women have lower libidos and less interest in sex.

This is due to  exhaustiveness, sleepiness, and increased tension mainly resulting from Inadequate sleep.

Studies have shown that men with sleep apnea  have low testosterone levels.

6. It's Makes You Forgetful

If you are trying to keep your memory sharp? Try getting enough of sleep.

As inadequate make you to forget easily. 


Sharp wave ripples” are brain events responsible for consolidating memory.

The ripples also transfer learned information from the hippocampus to the neocortex of the brain, where long-term memories are stored. Sharp wave ripples occur mostly during the deepest levels of sleep.

7. Obesity

Lack of sleep can you to be obese. 


This is because lack of sleep is linked to an increase in hunger and appetite, and possibly to obesity.

A study,  have shown that people who sleep less than six hours a day were almost 30 percent more likely to become obese than those who slept seven to nine hours. 

Inadequate sleep have been shown to decrease the hormone leptin and increase the hormone Ghrelin.

Ghrelin stimulates hunger and leptin signals satiety to the brain and suppresses appetite.
