Facts About Stroke

For a while now I have talked on stroke.

Yes I can remember that just this week I have posted twice on stroke.

But just this morning I asked myself a question that question was "DO MY READERS ACTUALLY KNOW MORE ABOUT STROKE? "

What prompted me to ask myself this question is because my last posts on stroke were actually very informative and useful but non you my readers tried to comment or even ask questions via the comment box.

So I just assumed that you (my readers) don't have enough information on stroke.

So in this post I will give a briefly insight on what stroke is.

WHAT IS STROKE?

A stroke, occurs when blood flow to an area of brain is cut off. When this happens, brain cells are deprived of oxygen and begin to die.

It's also known as BRAIN ATTACK.

When brain cells die during a stroke, abilities controlled by that area of the brain such as memory and muscle control are lost.

If a stroke  is not detected early, permanent brain damage or death can result.

TYPES OF STROKE

There are two main types of strokes:

1. Ischemic stroke occurs due to lack of blood flow to the brain. It's similar to heart attack.

Clots can form in the brain's blood vessels, in blood vessels leading to the brain, or even in blood vessels elsewhere in the body and then travel to the brain.

These clots block blood flow to the brain's cells.

When too much plaque clog the brain's blood vessels, Ischemic stroke can also occur.
Ischemic stroke is more common.

2. Hemorrhagic stroke occurs due to the rupture or breakage of a blood vessel in the brain.

This result to blood coming into direct contact with brain tissue, causing damage to brain cells.

SYMPTOMS OF STROKE ?

The most common symptoms of a stroke are:

Weakness of the face, arm, or leg on one side of the body

Dimming in one or both eyes

Difficulty talking, or understanding what others are saying

Loss speech

Sudden, severe headache  with no known cause

Loss of balance or unstable walking.

RISK FACTORS OF STROKE

Many risk factors can be controlled before they cause problems.

Uncontrolled diabetes

High cholesterol

Smoking

Excessive alcohol intake

High blood pressure

Atrial filibration

Obesity

Carotid or coronary artery disease

Age (>65)

Gender (Men have more strokes, but women have deadlier strokes)

Race (African-Americans are at increased risk)

Family history of stroke

IS STROKE PREVENTABLE ?

Your doctor can evaluate your risk for stroke and help you control your risk factors.

Some people experience warning signs before a stroke occurs.

Some people have no symptoms warning them prior to a stroke or symptoms are so mild they are not noticeable.

Regular medical check-ups are important in catching problems before they become serious.

Report any symptoms or risk factors to your doctor.

FACTS ABOUT STROKE

1. Up to 80 percent of strokes are preventable.

2. Stroke recovery is a lifelong process.

3. Stroke is a "brain attack".

4. Stroke can happen to anyone at any time.
