Table sugar (sucrose) which is usually use for sweetening our foods and also used by industries as sweeteners in most sweet processed drinks and foods, have a lot adverse effects on our body some which could leads life threatening disease if consumed in excess.
Below are five (5) risks of excess consumption of table sugar :
(1) CAN CAUSE SUGAR ADDICTION
Just like abusive drugs, table sugar cause a release of dopamine in the reward center of the brain.
Because sugar causes a large release of dopamine in the brain, it can cause sugar addiction in most people.
(2) CAN CAUSE INSULIN RESISTANCE
Consumption of a lot table sugar can cause resistance to the hormone insulin which can contribute to many disease.
Insulin which is a key hormone in the body controls blood sugar level.
Because of the harmful effects of sugar on the function of insulin, it is a leading driver of type II diabetes.
(3) CAN OVERLOAD THE LIVER
Table sugar (sucrose) has higher fructose than naturally occurring sucrose.
Before sugar enter the bloodstream from the digestive tract it is degraded into glucose and fructose which are its components.
Glucose can be metabolized by all cells in the body but fructose can only be metabolized by the cells of the liver.
If little table sugar is consumed the liver will turn the fructose to glycogen and store in the liver until we need it.
But if a lot of table sugar is consumed with little or no physical exercise, the liver gets overloaded with fructose forcing it to turn the fructose into fat.
Which eventually leads to fatty liver and all sort of serious problems.
(4) CAN CAUSE CANCER
Cancer is characterized by uncontrolled proliferation of the cells of a tissue. It is one of leading causes of death in worldwide.
Insulin is one of the key hormones in regulating this kind of proliferation.
Thus it is generally believed by scientists that having consistently elevated insulin level which is a consequence of high sugar consumption, can contribute to cancer.
Also most metabolic problems associated with high sugar consumption are known drivers of inflammation which is another potential cause of cancer.
Studies have shown that people who consume a lot of sugar are at higher risk of cancer.
(5) CAN CAUSE HEART DISEASE
For years saturated fats are blamed for heart diseases.
But new studies have shown that sugar Not fats may be one of the leading drivers of heart diseases via the harmful effects of fructose on the metabolism.
Studies indicate that high amount of fructose in table sugar, when in the body can rise triglycerides, small, dense, LDL (low density lipoprotein) and oxidize LDL, raise blood glucose and insulin levels and also increase abdominal obesity.
Many observational studies find a strong statistical association between high table sugar consumption and the risk of heart disease.
