5 HEALTH BENEFITS OF CABBAGE

Cabbage is enjoyed by many in different ways both as soup, and as fruit. Cabbage is delicious and nutritious, with many health benefits.

Some of the health benefits of cabbage include:

1.  SOURCE OF VITAMIN K

Cabbage is a good source of vitamin K, containing 66% of required daily amount of the vitamin K. Vitamin K is very essential for strong and health bones, because it promotes  osteotropic activity.  Also  vitamin K has  roles in the cure of Alzheimer's disease by limiting neuronal damage in the brain.

2.  SOURCE PHYTO-CHEMICALS

Cabbage contains significant amount of  phyto-chemicals like thiocyanates, indole-3-carbinol, lutein, zeaxanthin, sulforaphane, and isothiocyanates. These compounds are powerful antioxidants and known to help protect against breast, colon, and prostate cancers. 

Cabbage also has a number of anti-cancer compounds, like lupeol, sinigrin, and sulforaphane, which are known to stimulate enzyme activity and inhibit the growth of tumors, which can lead to cancer.

3.  BRAIN HEALTH

Red cabbage contains reasonable amount of vitamin K and anthocyanins. Vitamin K is essential in the production of sphingolipids, the myelin sheath around around nerves. This wrapping protects nerves from damage and decay. Thus, consuming vitamin K can improve your defense against neural degeneration, Alzheimer’s disease, and dementia.

4.  REDUCES BLOOD PRESSURE

Cabbbage also   contain reasonable amount of potassium. Potassium is a vasodilator, which means that it opens up the blood vessels and eases the flow of blood, so it isn’t being forced in a stress-inducing way through constricted arteries and veins.

5.  EYE HEALTH

Cabbage is a rich source of beta-carotene which good for the eye since the body can convert it to vitamin A.
Beta-carotene has also been positively linked to reduced chances of prostate cancer.
